# Uber Is Cutting 3,300 Jobs as It Reshapes Itself for the Robotaxi Era

Uber is undertaking its biggest restructuring since the pandemic, cutting around **3,300 jobs — roughly 10% of its global workforce** — as CEO Dara Khosrowshahi moves to simplify an organization that has become increasingly complex during years of rapid growth. The company says the changes are designed to make decision-making faster and free up resources for its biggest future opportunities.

A major focus is management. Uber plans to reduce the number of managers by around **20%**, eliminate many very small teams, and flatten parts of the organization where employees sit several layers below senior leadership. Engineering, science and some delivery functions are also being consolidated, while Uber’s restaurant, retail and direct-delivery businesses will be brought under more unified leadership.

Remote work is also being sharply reduced. Fewer than **1% of Uber employees** are expected to remain fully remote as the company concentrates more staff in major office hubs. Khosrowshahi said Uber’s growth over the past five years created additional layers, fragmented ownership and coordination costs that now need to be reversed.

The larger story, however, is autonomous vehicles. Uber is facing a transportation market increasingly shaped by robotaxi operators such as Waymo and Tesla and intends to redirect much of the savings toward growth, particularly autonomous driving partnerships and technology. Uber has committed more than **$10 billion** toward expanding its robotaxi strategy, making this restructuring as much about preparing for a driverless future as reducing costs today.

The cuts are particularly notable because Uber says its underlying business is performing well. Rather than responding to a collapse in demand, management is presenting the overhaul as an attempt to restructure from a position of strength before autonomous vehicles and intensifying competition fundamentally reshape ride-hailing and delivery.
