Chinese President Xi Jinping met Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi in Cairo on Wednesday during Xi’s first visit to Egypt in a decade. The two leaders held formal talks at Al-Ittihadiya Palace, followed by the signing of an agreement and several memoranda of understanding aimed at expanding cooperation between the two countries.

The talks focused on strengthening economic, technological and security ties. China and Egypt agreed to deepen cooperation in areas including trade, data centers, semiconductors and critical supply chains, while also discussing greater use of national currencies in bilateral trade. China has already become one of Egypt’s most important economic partners, with major investments concentrated around the Suez Canal Economic Zone and infrastructure projects.

The meeting also carried a broader geopolitical message. Xi called for a new regional security framework with less external interference, while Sisi emphasized Egypt’s pursuit of “strategic balance” between major powers. The visit comes as Cairo increasingly diversifies its relationships beyond Washington and as Beijing seeks a larger political, economic and security role across the Middle East.
